"A CHALLENGING EFFORT TO FIGHT OUT THALASSEMIA", said Sanjib Acharya, Chairman, SERUM Group.
Thalassemia is
deadly genetic blood disorder. People with Thalassemia are unable to make enough hemoglobin, which causes severe anemia. Hemoglobin, which is found in red blood cells
(RBC), carries oxygen to all parts of the body. When there is not enough hemoglobin in RBC, oxygen cannot get to all parts of the body and, thus, organs starved for
oxygen and are unable to function properly.
Thalassemia has no root cure, but it's growth rate can be retarded only by mass awareness and simple blood test. It is in the context in May 28, 2006 SERUM Group has
initiated Serum Thalassemia Prevention Federation (STPF) leading by interested individuals from different segments of society / social organizations to arrange
pre-marital detection and counseling to safeguard against Thalassemia victimization. STPF is one of the premier foundation for the treatment of Thalassemia.
It is dedicated to serving people afflicted with various forms of Thalassemia, the commonest single gene disorder in world population today. For over a decade, STPF,
a non-profit organisation, is tirelessly working for the treatment & cure for this fatal blood disorder, creating awareness, enhancing the quality of life of
Thalassemia patients and educating the medical professional, trait carriers and public about Thalassemia. It is equipped to conduct several Thalassemia tests for
instance Genetic Counselling & Genetic Testing. Here three standard treatments for moderate & severe forms of Thalassemia are used that include Blood Transfusions,
Chelation Therapy & Folic acid Supplements.
The solemn proclamation of STPF is to overpower and wipe out Thalassemia from the Earth. So that not a single child
say while growing up, "My eyes resemble to my father, my smile resemble to my mother and my sad inheritance is their deadly genetic disease."
And for that our
ceaseless compact basic programmes are:
• Creating awareness amongst school & college students and common people.
• Pre and post test counseling.
• Mass screening test done by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and red blood cell indices like MCV, MCH, MCHC, RDW and Hemoglobin.
• To create awareness in the community and adequately guide the new generation by conduction the awareness programmes. The drive - KNOW THALASSEMIA ... NO THALASSEMIA.
• Family counseling is required for the Thalassemia minor carrier reported patients and conducting test of other family members for Thalassemics.
• Thalassemia Awareness Week is organized every year between May 1 & 8 in association with S SERUM Analysis Centre (P) Ltd. during which we do free mass Thelassemia Screening in different parts of state.
